Tradition and Innovation. Body and Soul. Warm emotions and cool clearness – this is Yellow + Blue, the new album by German clarinetist Rolf Kühn, released on MPS Records. Now available everywhere!
As the album title Yellow + Blue indicates, Kühn is playing with contrasts. In doing so he creates new musical colors. The 88-year-old clarinetist appears incredibly young with his unbridled desire of experimenting and mixing various states of musical aggregation. Alongside five new compositions he is interpreting well-known ballads and legendary love songs – such as "I’m through with love" or "Angel Eyes". The interplay between old and new paired with new interpretations creates an uniquely fresh and invigorating sound.
In his new quartet Rolf Kühn has gathered around him excellent musicians such as pianist Frank Chastenier, bassist Lisa Wulff, and percussionist Tupac Mantilla. Jazz pianist Frank Chastenier is an experienced musical companion with a wide claviature of styles and nuances. The young bassist Lisa Wulff is one of the most interesting new shooting stars within the young and modern generation of jazz. Above all a side(wo)man much in demand. Last but not least – the magician behind the drums and percussions is the extraordinaire Tupac Mantilla. All in all: a firework of jazz at its best.
