Biography
Born on August 17th, 1971, in Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Motta, “The Colossus of Rio”, had an early inclination for music. Growing up in a musical family, he found his own musical language and established himself as one of the greats not only in Brazil but worldwide. With only 15 years of age, he released his first ever record and has not stopped since. Since then, his musical passions and references have expanded to soul, funk, jazz, classic-rock, classical music, blues and Broadway. So, it is no surprise that over the course of his career he has worked with renowned musicians, including Ryūichi Sakamoto, Max Middleton, Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick (Incognito), Greg Phillinganes, Chucho Valdez, Roy Ayers, Rolf Kühn and many more.
Selling over 300.000 copies in Brazil with his 1997 release “Manual Prático para Festas, Bailes e Afins” Ed Motta at that point manifested his position as a “Popstar” in his home country and went Platinum. He continued to merge gernes and explore the musical world, working in the film industry as well by adapting the soundtrack of “Tarzan” and recording it in Portuguese. He even explored the world of classical music that he intertwines with his roots from Brazil and different styles from all over the world time and time again. His dedication and hard work earned him a Latin Grammy Nomination in 2006 for his album “Aystelum”. Ed Motta steadily continued to release music over the years and 2018 marked the birth of his until then latest album “Criterion Of The Senses”.
Five years later, Ed Motta is back with his 14th studio album “Behind The Tea Chronicles” – delivering a top of the class jazz and funk album that was recorded with the highest audio standards.
The artists quotes Films and TV-Series as main inspiration for the album and was able to create a fascinating sound that incorporates not only Jazz and Funk but also Broadway sounds and explores different cinematic genres as well. On this latest album, Ed Motta is singing in English, telling stories that resonate which a broad audience and reflect on a variety of topics. Recording the band in Brazil, backing vocals in LA – featuring the legendary Paulette McWilliams and Phillip Ingram – strings in Prague and horns in Detroit, he worked with the best musicians he could find to create an astonishing sound, that will be recognised by the audiophile audience as top of the class.
Ed Motta truly is a jack of all traits when it comes to music and being able to transport feelings and a message through his playing and singing. His latest album “Behind The Tea Chronicles”, which will be release by MPS on the 20th of October, 2023 is no exception and has been highly anticipated by his fans throughout the world.
Beside music, Motta is not only a movie and series specialist but also a known expert when it comes to wine, tea and beer. He wrote columns about wine and food and curated wine, beer and tea menus for the Sao Paulo design hotel, Emiliano. Motta also maintained an online wine column for Brazil’s top weekly magazine, “Veja” while presenting a radio show “Empoeirado” for Sao Paulo’s Radio Eldorado, showcasing and presenting rare and obscure gems from his collection of 30,000 records.
