New Oscar Peterson Releases

MPS is bringing back two long awaited Oscar Peterson albums, that haven’t been available for quite some time. Hello Herbie sees the pianist reunite with his longtime collaborator Herb Ellis, with whom he formed one the best jazz combos of the 50s together with Ray Brown.  The other one, “Another Day”, is a classical trio album with the rather short lived Peterson-Mraz-Price constellation, that proves they were able keep up with some of the more famous trio versions.

Recorded in 1969 in the home studio of MPS founder Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, Peterson called out “hello Herbie” when the guiatrist entered the room. Eventually, this became the titel of the album.

Featured on this record are Sam Jones on bass and Bob Durham on drums. Hello Herbie captures the essence of jazz in all its brilliance, offering a captivating blend of intricate melodies, masterful improvisation and rhythmic dynamics. From the infectious grooves to the gripping solos, each track is a testament to the unique chemistry that the trio and Herb Ellis have built from the start. It is obvious that Peterson and Ellis were inspired by each other’s presence, but the entire line-up with Jones and Durham harmonizes so well that one might think they had been playing together for years.

Another Day is an impressive testimony to the extraordinary artistry of Oscar Peterson on piano, accompanied by the outstanding musicality of Jiri Mraz on bass and Ray Price on drums. The Peterson-Mraz-Price trio lasted for about a year, recording both Another Day and Walking The Line during November 10-13, 1970. The performances on Another Day show that this overlooked version of the Oscar Peterson Trio could hold its own with its more famous predecessors.

Both of these albums have been remastered by the Grammy-nominated mastering engineer Christoph Stickel. Only using analogue methods he always ensures to stay true to the sound and bring out the best of the music.

Available on vinyl, CD and digitally you can get your copies on the 13th of September.
