Julia Kadel recorded Kaskaden – her latest trio work to date – at the historic MPS studio in Villingen in 2019, where jazz legends, such as Oscar Peterson and Friedrich Gulda recorded in the sixties and seventies. Not long after the release of the album, Julia Kadel was awarded the Essener Jazz Pott 2020 for her innovative musical work. The upcoming trio album Powerful Vulnerability was recorded at the not less legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin. The album presents highly exciting, stylistically idiosyncratic and deeply personal music.

“Vulnerability is one of the keys to more strength. It contains a power and potential and at the same time a hope for more stability and connection to oneself as well as to others. I wish there were more spaces where people can show themselves vulnerable.”

Together with Athina Kontou and Devin Gray, the new trio explores the music of the distinctive pianist with a refreshing, honest and inspiring approach. More than ever, Kadel’s pieces move between unconventional compositions and pointed improvisations, harmonic sophistication, and multifaceted timbres. A lively musical language of high intensity results from various sources of inspiration, including classical modernism. There’s a special spirit that pervades Julia Kadel’s compositions, as the album title already suggests.
